Glendowie sits on the north-eastern edge of the Auckland isthmus, with the Waitematā Harbour and the Tāmaki River estuary along its northern and eastern edges. It takes its name from the Taylor brothers' old farm estate, Glen Dowie, and was developed as a suburb from the 1920s.
Today it's a settled residential suburb, and on the coastal sections hedges earn their keep as windbreaks and privacy screens.
